History of Loveland
In 1953, Loveland Distributing Company began under the leadership of its founder Louis Loveland. For five years after its inception, Mr. Loveland struggled with what was little more than a one-man operation. In 1958, the Company was acquired by Leon Stepanian Sr., an experienced veteran of the beer business who traced his alcohol industry roots back to the repeal of Prohibition. In the years prior to his acquisition of Loveland, Leon had worked as a salesman for the Gunther Brewery, and as the Sales Manager for the Home Brewing Company, the Richmond based producer of Richbrau Beer.
At the time of this acquisition, Loveland Distributing was a six person, four truck business operating from a meager facility in the heart of what is now Richmond’s downtown business district. During these first years, Mr. Stepanian guided the new venture with the principles of pride, passion, and customer service that have carried Loveland to the forefront of the Richmond beer market. In 1986, Leon K. Stepanian Jr. became President of an operation that had grown to 110 employees and a 200,000 square foot distribution center with 37 daily sales routes. In 1993, Mark Stepanian, a third generation family member, joined Loveland full time. Since his days as a part time warehouse worker, Mark, like his father before him, has worked in every position in the Company, and was named President in 2001.
Over the years, Loveland Distributing has been the principle distributor for several major beer brands in the Richmond market. Examples of some of our most successful are Miller High Life, Miller Lite, Coors Light and Corona. Over the past 48 years, Loveland’s brand portfolio has expanded to include other domestics such as Samuel Adams, Yuengling and a wide variety of imports and craft beers ranging from Sierra Nevada to Guinness, as well as the InBev and Modelo portfolios. In 2004, Loveland partnered with Redbull as a flagship brand in the non-alcoholic beverage category. Since that time, Loveland’s non-alcoholic portfolio has grown to include the Nestle Family of ready to drink brands such as Nesqik, Juicy Juice and Coffee Mate, and a full product line form the Sweet Leaf Tea Company.
Overall, hard work and dedication to our founding principles have made Loveland Distributing Company both the number one Richmond beer distributor, and the beverage purveyor of choice in our market.
